What does home insurance cover?
While each home insurance policy is tailored to the specific home being insured, there are some things home insurance policies generally provide coverage for or protect:
- The policyholder(s) and family members residing in the same home
- The home itself
- The contents of the home
- Any structures attached to the home or on the property
- Personal liability if you, or someone covered under the policy, are found responsible for bodily injury or property damage to another
What is not covered with home insurance?
Home insurance does not usually cover things like:
- The property (land) your home sits on
- Losses to your home-based business
- Losses from earthquakes
- Losses from floods
Protection for many of these losses is available, but they must be specifically identified in your home insurance policy or insured separately.
